UNO-OISS News

Issue #17—May 2012

•  I-20 or DS-2019 expiring? —Check your documents for the end date of your I-20 or DS-2019. If it is expiring in May and you will not be graduating, please make an appointment with an OISS advisor as soon as possible to discuss your situation.

Students who will begin a new level of study (e.g., completing bachelor's and commencing master's or completing master's and commencing PhD) will need to request their new I-20 at OISS. Updated financial documents are needed.

•  Have you ever received a new I-20 or DS-2019 from OISS? What should you do with your old I-20 or DS-2019? You should always keep any immigration documents that have been issued to you, even when you are given a new document with updated information or transfer to a new school. The forms I-20 or DS-2019 issued to you throughout your time in the U.S. are a record of your immigration status and these original documents will be needed in the future to apply for immigration benefits. Do not throw these documents away. Always keep them in a safe place for your records.

•  Travelling over Summer Break? — Be sure to have your I-20 or DS-2019 when you travel, as well as the other recommended documents listed on our Travel Instructions Handout at http://oiss.uno.edu/forms/Travel%20Instructions.pdf . Also, make sure that you have a valid travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019. The travel signature should be less than six months old as of the date you will return to the United States. If you need a travel signature please bring your I-20 or DS-2019 in to OISS for processing at least 10 days before your trip.

**You must be registered for the fall 2012 semester in order for OISS to process a travel signature.**

Fall classes are scheduled to begin on Monday, August 20. Please be sure to make your travel arrangements to return to New Orleans in time.

•  Optional Practical Training for graduating students: F-1 students who will be graduating in May 2012 and plan to apply for post-completion optional practical training are reminded that they should schedule an appointment with an OISS advisor as soon as possible to complete their OPT application.

F-1 students who have not yet begun the practical training application process are urged to do so soon to have the best possible opportunity to obtain your employment authorization card in a timely manner. Currently, it is taking the USCIS Texas Service Center approximately three months to process OPT employment authorization applications. Employment cannot begin unless you have the card "in hand."

•  No advising on May 11: Please note that there will be no advisors available for walk-in hours or appointments after 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 11. OISS will be closed starting at noon and will reopen on Monday, May 14 at 8:00 a.m.

•  Graduating students who will not apply for practical training— Students who will be ending their studies in May but have no plans to apply for practical training (F-1), academic training (J-1) or continue at a new school or in a new field or level of study must depart the United States within sixty days of completion of their academic program if they are in F-1 status, or within thirty days if they are in J-1 status.
