UNO-OISS News Issue #32—March 2015
Optional Practical Training (OPT) Information Session —If you missed the OPT information session in February, the second session for the spring semester will be on Thursday, March 26 at 2:30 p.m. in ED 208 . Advisors will give a general overview of OPT and explain the application process. If you are graduating in May, you should plan on applying for OPT as soon as possible and attend this information session. Current USCIS average processing times for the OPT application is three months, so make sure to contact an advisor as early as possible in March to make your application appointment. If you are unable to attend the session on March 26, you will need to schedule an appointment with an OISS advisor for an overview. Information sessions are open to all F-1 students and we encourage you to attend, especially if you will be graduating in May 2015. Income Tax Information —International students who work, are not exempt from filing income tax forms – even if the U.S. has a tax treaty with the country of origin. If you are an international student who needs help filling out your tax forms, come to one of the tax sessions. These tax sessions are scheduled to take place throughout March. You can find the dates, times and locations on our website at: http://oiss.uno.edu/tax.cfm . Make sure that you are signed up for the OISS Listserv so that you also receive this important information: http://www.oiss.uno.edu/subscription.cfm Travelling for Spring Break?— Be sure to have your I-20 or DS-2019 when you travel, as well as the other recommended documents listed on our Travel Instructions Handout at http://oiss.uno.edu/forms/Travel_Instructions.pdf . Also, make sure that you have a valid travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019. The travel signature should be less than six months old as of the date you will return to the United States. Remember, you need a travel signature even if you are going on a cruise that will make stops in ports outside of the U.S. If you need a travel signature for a spring break trip please bring your I-20 or DS-2019 to OISS for processing at least two weeks prior to traveling. Keep in mind that travel to other countries often requires students to obtain visas. Make sure to contact the embassy for the country you are visiting to determine if you need a visa in advance of travelling. International Night 2015—“Myths Around the World”— The International Student Organization will present International Night 2015 on Saturday, March 21 from 6:00-9:30 p.m. in the Human Performance Center. Tickets will be on sale at the University Center during lunch hours or in the OISS office International Center room 125 and they are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Holi —For the fifth year in a row, UNO's Student Activities Council and Chakra Indian Student Association have teamed up to bring the Hindu festival, Holi, to UNO's campus for one of the craziest, most memorable experiences that you will never forget. The event will take place this Sunday, March 8 from 2 p.m.—4 p.m. at the UNO Amphitheater. Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Traditionally, during the festival Hindu devotees chase each other through the streets, splashing colorful paint, powder and water on each other. Admission is free for students with UNO ID and includes colors for throwing and splashing. Admission for the general public is $5 and includes colors. UNO's Holi Festival will include dance performances, live music and a fun, messy experience! BCM Events - On March 14th at 6pm, the BCM will have an international potluck and game night at the Baptist Center building just off campus at 2222 Lakeshore Dr. This event is free, but we are asking students to cook a dish of food from your country to bring and share with everyone. This will be a great night to try delicious food from around the world and make some new friends. We will also play some games that night, so come join us for some food and fun! If you don't know where our building is, you can meet us in front of the UC at 5:50pm and we will walk over as a group. If you would rather come by yourself, our building (the Baptist Center 2222 Lakeshore Dr.), here are directions: Go down Elysian Fields Drive (towards the lake) until you get to the traffic circle. Take the first right on the traffic circle and this will be a road with 4 religious center buildings on it. Our building is the last building. Please email or call Kimberly Myers if you have any questions ( kimberly-icm@cox.net 504.450.9555).
