Issue #33—April/May 2015
UNO is closed on Friday, April 3 for the Easter Holiday— OISS will reopen on Monday, April 6 at 8:00 a.m.
Optional Practical Training for graduating students— F-1 students who will be graduating in May 2015 and plan to apply for post-completion optional practical training are reminded that they should schedule an appointment with an OISS advisor as soon as possible to complete their OPT application.
F-1 students who have not yet begun the practical training application process are urged to do so soon, so that you will have the best possible opportunity to obtain your employment authorization card in a timely manner. Currently, it is taking the USCIS Texas Service Center approximately three months to process OPT employment authorization applications. Employment cannot begin unless you have the card "in hand."
Graduating students who will not apply for practical training— Students who will be ending their studies in May but have no plans to apply for practical training (F-1), academic training (J-1) or continue at a new school or in a new field or level of study must depart the United States within sixty days of completion of their academic program if they are in F-1 status, or within thirty days if they are in J-1 status. Please check the dates on your I-20s and DS-2019s. If you are graduating and the program date needs to be shortened, please come to OISS.
Income Tax Information —International students are not exempt from filing income tax forms – even if the U.S. has a tax treaty with the country of origin. If you are an international student who needs help filling out your tax forms, come to one of the income tax sessions. There is only one more day of tax sessions scheduled before the tax filing deadline: Monday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in Kirschman Hall Room 228. For more information on the tax sessions, please check: http://oiss.uno.edu/tax.cfm . Please remember the deadline for filing taxes is Wednesday, April 15, 2015.
I-20 or DS-2019 expiring? —Check your documents for the end date of your I-20 or DS-2019. If it is expiring in May 2015 and you will not be graduating, please make an appointment with an OISS advisor as soon as possible to discuss your situation.

Have you ever received a new I-20 or DS-2019 from OISS? What should you do with your old I-20 or DS-2019? You should always keep any immigration documents that have been issued to you, even when you are given a new document with updated information or transfer to a new school. The forms I-20 or DS-2019 issued to you throughout your time in the U.S. are a record of your immigration status and these original documents will be needed in the future to apply for immigration benefits. Do not throw these documents away. Always keep them in a safe place for your records.
