UNO-OISS News Issue #4—December 2010 I-20 or DS-2019 expiring?—Check your documents for the end date of your I-20 or DS-2019. If it is expiring in December and you will not be graduating, please make an appointment with an OISS advisor as soon as possible to discuss your situation.Students who will begin a new level of study (e.g., completing bachelor’s and commencing master’s or completing master’s and commencing PhD) will need to request their new I-20 at OISS. Travelling over Intersession?— Be sure to have your I-20 or DS-2019 when you travel, as well as the other recommended documents listed on our Travel Instructions Handout at http://oiss.uno.edu/forms/Travel%20Instructions.pdf. Also, make sure that you have a valid travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019. The travel signature should be less than six months old as of the date you will return to the United States. If you need a travel signature please bring your I-20 or DS-2019 in to OISS for processing at least 10 days before your trip. Optional Practical Training—If you are completing your program in December, are in F-1 status, and have been planning to apply for post-completion optional practical training, but have not yet done so, do not delay! Fall 2010 graduates must send their completed applications to the USCIS Processing Center so that it arrives there before February 28, 2011, which is 60 days following the completion date for Fall graduates. Make an appointment with an advisor as soon as possible. Remember: It can take three months or more to obtain the Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Service Center. Employment can not begin until you receive your EAD card, even if the requested start date has passed. UNO closed for the holidays—Please keep in mind that all UNO offices will be closed starting at 4:30pm on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 and will not reopen until Monday, January 3, 2011. BCM Winter Events—Pancake Breakfast-The BCM/Newman Center's late night pancake breakfast study break is Sunday night, Dec. 5th the night before exams. This semester BCM is teaming up with the Newman center and will be serving at the Newman Center from 10-midnight and will have shuttle buses going to Privateer Place and Pontchartrain Hall every few minutes to pick up students who want a ride. There will also be free coffee and wi-fi at the Newman Center starting at 5pm that day. BCM at UNO invites all International Students to learn about and experience a New Orleans Christmas Tradition – Celebration in the Oaks at City Park, December 11th. Come see fabulous light displays and decorations and learn more about Christmas in America. Admission is $7. For more information about additional activities see the City’s website: www.celebrationintheoaks.com They’ll provide rides, refreshments and a brief time of sharing about Christmas. Just meet at the U.C. at 6:00. If you’re interested in going, please email Kimberly Myers by Dec. 10th, so I can provide adequate transportation. Airport Rides—For students leaving New Orleans for the winter break, the BCM is offering free rides to the airport. If you would like a ride to the airport, please email Kimberly Myers by Saturday, Dec. 4. Please include in your email: your name (and whether you are male or female), the time in which you need to be at the airport, the location from which you need to be picked up from, an email address (that you will check) and cell phone number, if you have one.
