Issue #46—October 2016
OPT Information Session - OPT information sessions for the fall semester will be on Friday September 30 at 2:30PM in the Geology/Psychology (GP) building room 2025 and on Thursday October 27 at 2:30PM in the Education (ED) building room 206. Advisors will give a general overview of OPT and explain the application process. If you are graduating in December, you should plan on applying for OPT in October or early November. Information sessions are open to all F-1 students and we encourage you to attend, especially if you will be graduating in December 2016.
Fulltime enrollment - Just a friendly reminder that F-1 and J1 students are required to register full time for each term. You must have at least 12 credit hours if you are an undergraduate student and 9 credit hours if you are a graduate student to remain full time and in status. You are also required to be registered full time the entire semester.
On-line Classes – No more than the equivalent of one on-line class or 3 credits per semester may count towards the “full course of study” requirement. This means that undergraduate students must have a minimum of 9 credit hours on-site and graduate students must have a minimum of 6 credit hours on-site.
Traveling outside the U.S during the semester – All international students should plan to travel outside the U.S during academic breaks and not during the Fall and Spring semesters while classes are in session. Traveling outside the U.S (two weeks or more) during the semester for personal/medical reasons that are not considered an emergency will not be allowed without written permission from all your professors. If you are a graduate student you will also need permission from the Graduate School.
Got Soccer Skills?— The World Cup Soccer Tournament will be presented by the International Student Organization on Saturday, October 22 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the quad. This event is a chance for you to show off your soccer skills and enjoy a day of fun competition with student teams. It is a coed 8-on-8 tournament; registration will be $12 per player and each team can have between 8 to 10 players. Anyone is welcome to participate. For additional information or to register a team, email firstname.lastname@example.org or Santana Mitchell at: email@example.com .
Oktoberfest - Oktoberfest will take place during the following weekends 7-8, 14-15, 21-22 and will feature German food, music and fun. Hours: Fridays – 4:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. and Saturdays – 1:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Admission $8, free for children under 12. The event will take place at Deutsches Haus on 415 Williams Blvd., Kenner. Hike in the Swamp at the Jean Lafitte National Park - On Saturday, October 8th, the BCM at UNO will take international students for a hike in the swamp at the Barataria Preserve in the Jean Lafitte National Park. The national park has a boardwalk trail through the swamp and you'll be able to observe some beautiful plants and flowers and hopefully some amazing creatures like alligators and many beautiful birds. If you would like to go on this trip please email Kimberly Myers (firstname.lastname@example.org ) by Thursday, October 6th. Transportation will be provided and we will meet at the UC at UNO at 8:45am on Saturday morning and plan to return to UNO by 2pm. You will want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, water, food to snack on or bag of lunch, comfortable walking shoes (tennis shoes or closed-toe shoes are preferable) and a camera if you like to take pictures. Please contact Kimberly if you have any questions. If you would like to read more info about the national park, here is the website: http://www.nps.gov/jela/barataria-preserve.htm
